During the installation of anchors to enable the deepening of wharfs 1 to 6 at Haifa Port, it was discovered that the passenger terminal building was sinking. An examination of the problem revealed that the building sits on shallow foundations above unstable infill. That discovery led to a halt in the anchor installation work until the building foundations could be reinforced to prevent sinking. The reinforcing method chosen was small diameter piles using a hollow auger.

The work was carried out using minimum vibration in order to avoid any further sinking. To allow the passenger terminal to continue functioning normally, it was divided up into separate sections. At each stage a different section was dealt with, while at the same time, normal operations continued at the terminal.

After completion of the work the passenger terminal returned to normal and the anchor work was completed successfully.
